Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together thousands of places, events and people. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history.

In Wales, Drysau Agored (Open Doors) encourages people to explore hidden cultural and historical treasures. Organised by Cadw, groups of our volunteers across Wales are making the most of a special chance to show off their churches.

The festival runs throughout the entire month of September.

Each year the Heritage Open Days team set a theme. This year, it's People Power. A celebration of local communities', groups' and individuals' ability to evoke change.

Our founder, Ivor Bulmer-Thomas was most certainly a powerful person. Through his grit and determination, he changed the fate of churches across England and Wales. We are proud to continue his legacy. To this end, visitors to our churches will be able to learn a little more about Ivor.

Local groups will also champion other extraordinary people. For instance, in Lightcliffe, we will re-open the tower which protects Ann Walker's memorial.

While in St Denis's, East Hatley, locals will be on hand to share their research on Hatley's residents... including Sir George Downing and The Wright Brothers!

In Wales, the extraordinary volunteers at St Michael's, Tremain will be on hand to welcome visitors and on Sunday 29th at 5pm, there will be a Harvest Songs of Praise, which is open to all. Further north, meet the team at Hen Eglwys Llanfaglan - our most romantic church, where history oozes from the walls.
