Waddesdon Hill

Strict and Particular Baptist Chapel

This Grade II* chapel of 1792 was founded by Francis Cox.

It evokes simple rustic nonconformist piety with unpretentious monuments, most of them hand-painted and a fireplace used by the ladies following baptism in the total immersion baptistry which is under a trap door immediately in front of the Georgian pulpit. Please do not lift the cover as it is very heavy.

The chapel was acquired by the Friends some twenty years ago on its closure to save it from a conversion which would have destroyed most of its quality. Our programme of repairs has included some replacement of timber of the stairs to the gallery which is otherwise original.

We conserved the exterior of the chapel in 2009-2010 and that of the original stables (where worshippers would tether their horses) in 2005-2006.
