We’re delighted that the church of St Michael and Angels, Gwernesney, Monmouthshire, which came into our care in late 2017, is now open for visitors. Gwernesney (‘Gwernesni’) translates as the parish of the alders, after the alder trees (‘gwern’) that once grew here in great abundance and the church is 13th century in origin, with an evocative 15th century wagon roof and rood-beam.
Since vesting, we have been busy undertaking urgent repairs – including upgrading the rainwater disposal and drainage system and rebuilding the masonry head and walling to several windows. More repairs will be needed in due course, but we are so pleased that the building is now open for all to enjoy!
