While Bavaria had its ‘mad’ King Ludwig II (builder of the fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein) and Glamorgan had the 3rdMarquess of Bute (think Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch), Pembrokeshire had Sir Thomas Lloyd. Self-styled 25th Lord Marcher of Cemais, Lloyd placed great emphasis on his Welsh roots and celebrated this by spending a fortune on fashionable Gothic architecture – transforming houses and churches. Unfortunately he lacked the unexhaustable pockets of King Ludvig and the Marquess, and at his death the estate was deeply in debt; his house at Bronwydd now sadly in ruins. The diminutive church he fashioned at Meline however was untouched by time, and is now conserved in our care.
